I Hate my Job. When Can I Jump Ship
I Hate my Job. When Can I Jump Ship I Hate my Job. When Can I Jump Ship Thats when you start to feel resentful Why am I here? Where should I go next? And most importantly, when can I jump ship? Before you quit with a dramatic Jerry Maguire-like speech, or stomp into your bosss office to render your two-weeks notlageice, take a moment to assess your options. Take a breath. Think about how to proceed in a way that will make your day-to-day better, and not worse.Im thinking seriously about quitting my job.If you know that your current job is not the right fit for you, but youre not sure whether you are ready to leave, there are two things that you must do before you take any action1. Dont quit right away. This is especially true if you dont have another source of steady, reliable income not including an emergency fund. Today, even qualified and seasoned professionals may remain unemployed for as long as one year while seeking a new position. If you quit your job and run out of savings , youll be forced to take another mediocre job that may make you feel even more discouraged than your current position.Quitting prematurely often requires compromises with respect to financial security, position, or company in time, you may be more likely to take a lower salary or a stop-gap job to pay the bills. So if you think that your current job is not your dream job, start building a reserve of money in addition to your emergency fund to provide you with more freedom when you make the decision to quit.2. Decide on the job that you want. While you may be certain that you dont like the job you have now, spend some time examining what type of job you will like in the future as well as what is necessary for you to get it. Make a list of everything you like and do not like about your current job. Parts of this list can be tricky if you genuinely hate your job, so look at things you may be taking for granted. Do you have flexible hours? Is their free parking particularly close by? Do you have casual Fridays? Compare to the list youve built on your current position to make sure that you are not jumping from one bad situation to another, and to help pinpoint the ideal job for you.I am definitely quitting. For those who cannot spend another moment in their current employment situation, here are two important questions to ask yourself before quit day1. How long do I have to stay? The length of time you stay in your current job will depend on several factors. Most career experts recommend at least a year even if its downright unbearable. However, for more advanced positions, three years may be even better. It is interesting to note, however, that some career experts believe staying at a job for more than four years will hinder your growth. Just remember that whenever you decide to leave, the goal is to move up the corporate ladder not down or straight across.2. What can do I to make it better? Lets say that youve decided you are going to stay at your job until the three-year mark what can you do to make it better? Try taking on additional duties in an area of interest that is currently outside your purview. If you joined the company to be a absatzwirtschaft strategist, but are still an administrative assistant, consider volunteering to help with tasks in the marketing department or asking to shadow a more senior co-worker. Make sure to obtain the consent of your supervisor, and stress that the added duties will be completed in addition to, not instead of, your current duties. When you do finally quit, try to give as much notice as possible. Consider giving a month if it is difficult to find candidates for your position, or if they are difficult to train. Discuss closing out your current duties with your supervisor, thank them for the opportunity, request a well-written reference letter, and leave on good terms.Still unsure when to quit? Check out the Harvard Business Reviews recent career case studies of individuals in this situation.

Mastering the Art of Small Talk in a Job Interview
Mastering the Art of Small Talk in a Job InterviewMastering the Art of Small Talk in a Job InterviewThere it is, that jittery feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when a job interview is fast approaching. Yes, theres a lot to be nervous about as you lie in bed thinking about it. Getting schwefelyperit or stuck in traffic. Have you gone over the answers youve prepared to those pesky interview questions you might get? Did you do enough research on the company? Did you choose the right interview outfit, and will your LinkedIn stalking of the hiring manager pay off? With all of those things to worry about, there is one particular aspect most job seekers neglect to think about the art of small talk. Its always part of any job interview but rarely planned for because its something we take for granted. But filling the silence during a shared walk to the conference room can mean as much as what you share during the actual interview. So, you need to be prepared to engage them in some pro fessional, and hopefully impressive, small talk.Do you know how to leverage this seemingly insignificant chat to your advantage? Do you know how to use it to make an even better impression on your interviewer?Lets take a closer look at the art of small talkDont use Clichs Yes, talking about the weather is a good causa back but it definitely doesnt make an impact or make you memorable. Do yourself a favor and try to skip clichs and generalities because every other candidate is going to use them and you dont want to be just another candidate, unless youre interviewing for a role as the weather personFind a Common Bond Remember all that stalking you did on LinkedIn? Did you see any common interests you share? Are they a runner training for a marathon? If youre a runner, this is a great opportunity to let them know. Do they rescue animals? If youre a fellow dog lover, add that to your conversation. If you share an alma mater, by all means use that as a topic for small talk because it fo rms an instant connection. Now, you dont want to say things that will make you look like a creeper, Hey, I saw your post from three years ago that says you ran in the New York marathon. Instead, bring it up as naturally as possible when they ask the How are you? question. Im doing great, thank you I began my morning with a run. Im training for an upcoming half marathon. If your interviewer takes the bait, youll have an interesting conversation about something youre both passionate about.Talk about Something Related to the Company Youre there to demonstrate youd be a great fit for the company so show them you have an interest in whats going on in the organization. While youre waiting, watch for conversation starter clues. Like the office chili competition, you overheard the receptionist talking about to another coworker. Or, talk about the recent award you saw hanging on the wall that the company received. These little insights into the company can provide a great and relevant topic of small talk with your interviewer so dont be afraid to use them.Ask open ended questions Lets face it, small talk can be awkward but when youre feeling panicky, this little tactic can really help. Responding with an open-ended question to their, How are you? question will help shift the spotlight off of you. For instance, you can say, Im doing great, thank you. How about you? Did you work on anything interesting this morning? When you think about preparing for small talk, it can seem a little strange, but when every second in a job interview is an opportunity to make a good impression make the time to prepare Instead of wasting time talking about the weather, take these tips and use them as an advantage over the other job candidates.

10 new work
10 new workWe need gender neutral dress codes in the workplace. If you dont yet agree with that statement, look no farther than a 55-page presentation given to women executives at Ernst Young in a June 2018 training. pThe presentation, which made headlines last month when an offended participant a href=https//www.huffpost.com/entry/women-ernst-young-how-to-dress-act-around-men_n_5da721eee4b002e33e78606a target=_blankleaked it to the Huffington Post/a, reinforced gendered stereotypes of how women should dress and present themselves at work. Some highlights, which are actually lowlights in terms of equality in the workforce/pul class=ee-ul ee-ulliA list of appearance blunders for women to avoid, including no-nos like too-short skirts, plunging necklines, bottle blonde, flashy jewelry/liliOutfit and grooming suggestions to minimize distractions from your skills sic set like good haircut, manicured nails, and well-cut attire/liliAdvice on how to dress dont fla unt your body sexuality scrambles the mind/li/ulpThe women, there to invest in their professional development, were not learning how to be better leaders or combat sexist stereotypes at work, but instead were being lectured to about what to wear and how to groom themselves./ppWhile the presentation wasnt the official EampY dress code, it does highlight bias and assumptions made around gender that women have to manage. And this particular training focused only on the male-female binary. Employees who identify as transgender or nonbinary might feel even more burdened by dress code policies based on gender. /ppImagine how much more productive all employees, regardless of gender, could be, if they werent focused on avoiding dress code policing./ppTraditional gender-based dress codes can also discriminate on the basis of race. Many grooming guidelines for women, including rules on acceptable haircuts, are extra burdens for black employees, particularly those who want to wear their hair in natural styles. a href=https//daily.jstor.org/how-natural-black-hair-at-work-became-a-civil-rights-issue/ target=_blankIn 2010, Chastity Jones got a job offer/a to be a customer service representative from Catastrophe Management Solutionsbut the offer was contingent on her cutting off her locs. When she refused, the company took back the job offer, and when she sued, with the help of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, she lost her case in 2013 and again in 2016, when her appeal was dismissed. /ppAnd beyond forcing women of color to maintain their hair in a way thats deemed acceptable, gender-based dress codes can also discriminate against people of certain religions. Employees whose faiths keep them from cutting their hair or necessitate that they wear certain clothing (including head coverings) shouldnt be forced to adapt their beliefs to what their employer deems professionally appropriate for a woman at work./ppThe possibility for gender-, race-, and faith-based disc rimination posed by prescriptive employee dress codes has a href=https//www.hrc.org/resources/workplace-dress-codes-and-transgender-employees target=_blankled the Human Rights Campaign to recommend/a that if an employer has a dress code, it should modify it to avoid gender stereotypes and enforce it consistently. Requiring men to wear suits and women to wear skirts or dresses, while legal, is based on gender stereotypes. Alternatively, codes that require attire professionally appropriate to the office or unit in which an employee works are gender-neutral./ph3Okay, So Gender Neutral Dress Codes Sound Good. What Do They Look Like?/h3pIn their simplest (which, in my opinion, also means best) form, gender neutral dress codes at the workplace can take the form of General Motors dress policy. When now-CEO Mary Barra was VP of global human resources for the automotive giant, a href=https//qz.com/work/1242801/gms-dress-code-is-only-two-words/ target=_blankshe replaced their 10-page dress co de with two words/a Dress appropriately. /ppIn the article linked above, the author explains why Barras dress code works so well She avoided assumptions, instead choosing to trust her employees judgment, which in turn empowered all employees and was particularly impactful for women. /ppFor workplaces that need more specificity about what employees can wear, HR should follow in the footsteps of other institutions that have successfully adopted gender-neutral dress codes. Namely, high schools./ppAfter a wave of protests, social media outrage, and thoughtful advocating, a href=https//www.dispatch.com/news/20180919/more-schools-revamping-sexist-dress-codes target=_blankseveral schools have revamped their dress codes/a, which tended to put undue burden on female students. ASME Launches New ASME EFx Program
ASME Launches New ASME EFx Program ASME Launches New ASME EFx Program ASME Launches New ASME EFx ProgramASME is introducing a new program for engineering students, ASME EFx, which is an offshoot of the Societys successful ASME Engineering Festival (ASME E-Fest) program. The new ASME EFx events, the first of which is planned to be held in India next month, have been conceived as smaller-scale versions of the ASME E-Fests that can be easily staged by local colleges and universities throughout the world. The new ASME EFx events, which are intended to accommodate up to several hundred attendees and last one day or less, offer colleges and universities a novel way to engage with their students, provide students with professional development and skills training, and prepare them to compete at full ASME E-Fests. Planned and administered by local organizers with the assistance of ASME staff, the new events give students a taste of the ASME E-Fests experience without the costs associated with traveling to and attending a regular ASME E-Fest.Although smaller in scale, ASME EFx events can include many of the same activities that are featured at traditional ASME E-Fests, including keynote sessions, interactive workshops and training sessions, Innovation Showcase critical-thinking sessions, social and networking events, and impromptu competitions.ASME members or student members who are interested in hosting an ASME EFx at their local university should contact the ASME EFx team at asmeefxasme.org. For more information on ASME EFx events, visit https//efests.asme.org/efx.
